Does the use of Fosamax and Alendronate cause femur breaks?

FDA warns patients of the dangers of using bisphosphonates like Fosamax and its generic Alendronate.

Fosamax and Alendronate have recently been in the news after post-menopausal women taking the bisphosphonates have suffered serious femur, or thigh bone, breaks. (link to Contact Us page)

What do Fosamax and Alendronate treat?

Doctors prescribe Fosamax and Alendronate for various conditions.

Uses of the drug include:

  • Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, the weakening of the bones, in post-menopausal women.
  • Treatment of osteoporosis in men.
  • Treatment of Paget's disease in the bone. Paget's disease occurs when the bones become soft and brittle, causing deformities or easy breakage.

Fosamax and Alendronate should add density to bones, preventing bone breakdown.

How are Fosamax and Alendronate taken?
Depending on the type and severity of your condition:

  • Take 5, 10, 35, and 70 mg doses once every week in the morning for osteoporosis treatment.
  • Take 40 mg doses once a day for six months to treat Paget's disease.

*Fosamax and Alendronate come in both tablet and liquid form.

What are the side effects?
There are many side effects of Fosamax and Alendronate, but the most common include:
  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Swelling of joints, hands, or legs
  • Difficulty or pain when swallowing
  • Stomach pain
